Marcello Mastroianni — Biography
Marcello Vincenzo Domenico Mastroianni (28 September 1924 – 19 December 1996) was an Italian actor widely regarded as one of his country's greatest screen performers. Born in the small town of Fontana Liri and raised in Turin and Rome, he took small stage parts as a young man; during World War II he was detained by the Nazis but escaped and hid in Venice until the war ended.
After the war he worked with director Luchino Visconti in the theatre before moving into film in the late 1940s, achieving his breakthrough in the late 1950s with the caper comedy Big Deal on Madonna Street. His celebrated partnership with Federico Fellini made him an international star: he played a disillusioned gossip columnist in La Dolce Vita (1960) and a director suffering a creative crisis in 8½ (1963). He also formed a famous screen duo with Sophia Loren, appearing alongside her in numerous films.
Mastroianni earned three Academy Award nominations, for Divorce Italian Style, A Special Day and Dark Eyes, and twice won the Best Actor prize at Cannes. Over a career spanning roughly 150 films, he moved easily between comedy and drama while remaining rooted in European cinema. He died of pancreatic cancer in Paris.
