Ghosts of Rome (Italian: Fantasmi a Roma) is a 1961 Italian comedy directed by Antonio Pietrangeli that mixes humorous storytelling with touches of fantasy. The film stars Marcello Mastroianni opposite Sandra Milo, supported by a large ensemble that includes Eduardo De Filippo, Vittorio Gassman, Belinda Lee, Tino Buazzelli, Lilla Brignone, Claudio Gora, Franca Marzi and Ida Galli. The script was written jointly by Sergio Amidei, Ennio Flaiano and Ettore Scola, and the musical score came from Nino Rota. With a running time of around one hundred minutes, the picture reached international audiences under several alternative titles: it opened in the United Kingdom in 1964 as The Phantom Lovers, appeared in German cinemas in 1963 under the name Das Spukschloß in der Via Veneto, and was shown in France as Les Joyeux Fantômes. Shot in Italian, the production brought together many familiar faces of Italian screen comedy of the era.
