Black Feathers

Penne nere, known internationally as Black Feathers, is a 1952 Italian war drama directed and written by Oreste Biancoli. Shot at the Titanus Studios in Rome, with sets designed by art director Ottavio Scotti, the Italian-language production runs about 95 minutes and unfolds against the backdrop of World War II.

The story is set in Stella, a mountain village in the Carnia region near the Italian-Austrian border, where the war tears apart the love between Pieri Cossutti and Gemma Vianello. Pieri and his brother Olinto are drafted, and after the September armistice they struggle to return home from Albania; Olinto dies along the way. Reaching the village, Pieri prevents the Germans from blowing up the local dam. Marcello Mastroianni stars as Pieri, alongside Marina Vlady, Camillo Pilotto, Guido Celano and Enzo Staiola.
