That Night in Varennes (Varennes Gecesi)

Directed by Ettore Scola, this 1982 French-Italian historical drama unfolds during the early years of the French Revolution. In June 1791, King Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette flee Paris disguised as servants, only to be stopped and arrested at Varennes before reaching their royalist allies. Rather than following the royal couple directly, the film imagines a group of travelers sharing a coach a few hours behind the fugitives' carriage: the writer and publisher Restif de la Bretonne, the aging adventurer Giacomo Casanova, the American revolutionary thinker Thomas Paine, and Sophie de la Borde, a lady-in-waiting to the queen. Each passenger embodies a different social world, from the fading aristocracy to the rising bourgeoisie, and their conversations along the road reflect on the upheaval transforming France. Adapted by Scola and Sergio Amidei from Catherine Rihoit's novel, the film competed for the Palme d'Or at the 1982 Cannes Film Festival. The international cast includes Marcello Mastroianni, Hanna Schygulla, Jean-Louis Barrault and Harvey Keitel.
