To Each His Own Cinema

To Each His Own Cinema (Chacun son cinéma) is a 2007 French anthology film commissioned to mark the 60th anniversary of the Cannes Film Festival. Initiated by the festival's leadership, the project brought together 36 acclaimed directors from 25 countries across five continents, each contributing a three-minute short inspired by the movie theatre. The result is a collection of 34 shorts, since the Coen brothers and the Dardenne brothers each worked as pairs.

Contributors include Roman Polanski, David Lynch, Wong Kar-wai, Ken Loach, Abbas Kiarostami, Wim Wenders, Takeshi Kitano, Theo Angelopoulos and Lars von Trier. Subtitled "a declaration of love to the big screen," the film moves through recurring concerns: tributes to classic European art cinema, childhood memories of moviegoing, the transporting power of film, and the things audiences do in the dark, from talking and crying to falling in love. It stands as a collective celebration of the cinema experience itself.
