The Poppy Is Also a Flower

This 1966 American-French-Austrian co-production is a spy and crime film originally made for television under the auspices of the United Nations, as part of a series of specials intended to promote the organization's work. Directed by Terence Young from a story by Ian Fleming, it carries a clear anti-drug message.

Two undercover agents follow an opium shipment tagged with a radioactive substance, tracing the trafficking network from Iran all the way into Europe. Their mission exposes the devastation caused by the drug trade and the corruption that comes with it. Much of the desert and border footage was filmed on location in Iran.

The picture features a remarkable international ensemble including Yul Brynner, Omar Sharif, Eli Wallach, Angie Dickinson, Senta Berger, Stephen Boyd, Trevor Howard, Jack Hawkins, Rita Hayworth and Marcello Mastroianni, and is narrated by Grace Kelly, appearing as Princess Grace of Monaco. It was also released under the alternate titles Poppies Are Also Flowers and The Opium Connection, and as Danger Grows Wild in the United Kingdom.
