The Blue Exile (Mavi Sürgün) (translated)

Movie · 1993 · 5 people

The Blue Exile (Mavi Sürgün) is a 1993 Turkish-Greek drama film directed by Erden Kıral, who co-wrote the screenplay with Kenan Ormanlar and Elly Scheller. The film draws on the autobiographical memoir of the same name by Cevat Şakir Kabaağaçlı, who wrote under the pen name Halikarnas Balıkçısı; the script also references his stories Unuttuğu Türkü and Gündüzü Kaybeden Kuş.

The narrative begins with Cevat Şakir's exile to Bodrum in 1925 and, through flashbacks, reaches back into the writer's childhood and past to portray his life in a layered fashion. Can Togay plays Cevat Şakir, alongside a cast including Hanna Schygulla, Özay Fecht, Ayşe Romey and Levent Ülgen. The film was selected as Turkey's entry for Best Foreign Language Film at the 66th Academy Awards, though it was not accepted as a nominee.
