I Saw the Sun (Güneşi Gördüm)

Movie · 2009 · 12 people

I Saw the Sun is a 2009 Turkish drama film written and directed by Mahsun Kırmızıgül, his second work as a director, for which he also composed the music. Produced by Boyut Film, it opened on 13 March 2009 and ranked among the year's highest-grossing Turkish releases, earning a re-release later that year.

The story follows a large family forced to abandon their village in southeastern Turkey amid armed conflict and forced evacuation. The family splits in two: one group tries its luck in Istanbul while the others attempt to reach Norway illegally. Around characters such as Ramo, Davut, Mamo and Kadri, who has always felt like a girl, the film weaves themes of migration, poverty and identity. It was Turkey's official submission for Best Foreign Language Film at the 82nd Academy Awards.
