Farewell (Veda) (translated)

Veda ("Farewell") is a 2010 Turkish biographical drama written and directed by Zülfü Livaneli. Drawing on the memoirs of Salih Bozok, it traces the life of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, founder and first president of the Republic of Türkiye, and opened in cinemas across the country on 26 February 2010 with a running time of roughly two hours.

The film follows the bond between Atatürk and Bozok from their boyhood in Salonika through their years as comrades in arms and on into the republic they built together — a friendship of half a century that lasted until death. The story is told through Bozok's eyes: in the final hours before his own end, he relives the turning points of Atatürk's life while composing a farewell letter to his son.

Sinan Tuzcu plays Atatürk, supported by a cast that includes Serhat Kılıç, Dolunay Soysert, Ezgi Mola and Özge Özpirinçci. Veda became one of the highest-grossing Turkish films of 2010, and contemporary reviews singled out its cinematography, sets and costume design.
