Clouds of May (Mayıs Sıkıntısı)
Clouds of May is a 1999 Turkish drama-comedy film written and directed by Nuri Bilge Ceylan, released in cinemas on 10 December 1999. His third work after the short film The Cocoon and The Town, it is dedicated to Anton Chekhov and was produced by Ceylan's own company, NBC Film. The cast includes Mehmet Emin Toprak, Muzaffer Özdemir, Mehmet Emin Ceylan and Fatma Ceylan, largely amateur performers drawn from the director's close circle.
The story follows Muzaffer, a filmmaker who returns to the small town where he grew up, determined to shoot a film there. His father struggles to keep the oak trees he has nurtured for years from being taken over by the forestry administration while also acting in his son's film, and young Saffet dreams of escaping factory work for the city. The film won Best Director and Second Best Film at the 1999 Antalya Golden Orange Film Festival, where the jury also gave special awards to all of its amateur actors.
