Winter Sleep (Kış Uykusu)

Winter Sleep is a 2014 drama directed by Nuri Bilge Ceylan, who co-wrote the screenplay with his wife Ebru Ceylan. Drawing on Anton Chekhov's stories and a subplot from Dostoevsky's The Brothers Karamazov, the film was produced by NBC Film and Zeyno Film as a co-production between Turkey, Germany and France. Premiering at the Cannes Film Festival on 16 May 2014, it won the Palme d'Or and the FIPRESCI Prize at the festival's 67th edition, becoming the second Turkish film to claim the top award after Yılmaz Güney's Yol.

Shot in Cappadocia, the film follows Aydın, a retired actor running the boutique hotel he inherited from his father, whose relationships with his much younger wife Nihal and his divorced sister Necla grow increasingly strained. Starring Haluk Bilginer, Melisa Sözen and Demet Akbağ, the 196-minute film opened in Turkish cinemas on 13 June 2014 and was submitted as Turkey's entry for Best Foreign Language Film at the 87th Academy Awards.
