The Gap (Ara) (translated)

Ara is a Turkish drama film written and directed by Ümit Ünal, first released in 2007. It follows two middle-class urban couples —Veli and Selda, and Veli's business partner Ender and Gül— over the span of a decade: Selda is involved with Ender, while Gül and Veli are also having an affair. Through these four characters' tangled bonds of friendship, love and betrayal, the film reflects on Turkey's financial and cultural upheavals of the previous twenty years.

The story was shot entirely digitally in a single 80-square-meter apartment in the Kuledibi neighbourhood of Beyoğlu, Istanbul; because the flat is rented out for commercials, music videos and TV serials, its decor keeps changing, visually marking the passage of ten years. The leads —Erdem Akakçe, Betül Çobanoğlu, Serhat Tutumluer and Selen Uçer— are all originally stage actors. The title, meaning "between" in Turkish, points to the characters' in-betweenness in society and in their relationships.
