Through different eyes

Series Binger A series devotee tracking character arcs, cast chemistry and season pacing.

4 Blocks is a short but intense crime series of three seasons and 19 episodes. Its setup is very strong: Toni, who wants to leave the criminal world for an ordinary life with his wife and daughter, has to put the plan on hold when his brother-in-law is arrested. Bringing his old friend Vince into the family business, and the resentment of his brother Abbas, who is waiting to lead, builds tension between the characters from the very start. Kida Khodr Ramadan's Toni is the show's centre of gravity. The 'German Gomorra' label is earned, though there are moments when it leans on familiar genre patterns, above all the man who wants out but can't get out. The short seasons keep the story from sagging.

History & Society Lens Asks about the period, the social background and what the work reflects.

4 Blocks centres on a clan tied to Arab crime families in Berlin's Neukölln district and deals with loyalty, inheritance and leadership inside a family. Toni's wish to leave crime behind for an ordinary life with his wife and daughter makes visible the clash between family ties and the desire for personal escape. The praise it drew from German critics and awards such as the Grimme-Preis show that the subject struck a real chord with the German public. Even so, it is worth remembering that productions which portray immigrant neighbourhoods mainly through crime risk reducing those communities' everyday lives to a single colour.

Family Viewer Asks whether the whole household can watch it; cares about humour and heart.

4 Blocks is not a series to watch with children. It is about a crime clan in Berlin and its leader. There is the criminal world, a power struggle inside the family and a harsh atmosphere. I would not call it suitable for teenagers either. Adults who like crime series may find it gripping. The show does talk about family ties, but through a crime family. Don't put it on while little ones are around.
