Yadé Kara — Biography

Yadé Kara was born in 1965 in Çayırlı, in eastern Turkey, and grew up in West Berlin. She studied English and German philology and trained in acting at the Schiller Theatre, later working as an actress, teacher and journalist in cities including London, Istanbul and Hong Kong, where she also wrote extensively for radio and television.

Her debut novel, "Selam Berlin," published in 2003, brought her wide recognition and earned her the German Book Prize as well as the Adelbert von Chamisso Prize in 2004. She followed it with a second novel, "Café Cyprus," in 2008. Writing in German while drawing on her Turkish-German background, Kara is regarded as one of the notable voices of contemporary German-language literature.
