Voice of My Father (Babamın Sesi)

Voice of My Father (Turkish: Babamın Sesi, Kurdish: Dengê Bavê Min) is a 2012 drama film directed by Orhan Eskiköy and Zeynel Doğan, from a screenplay by Eskiköy. A co-production of Turkey, Germany and France produced by Perişan Film, it was shot in Kurdish and Turkish in the towns of Elbistan and Diyarbakır.

The film portrays a Kurdish-Alevi family marked by the Maraş Massacre. Basê, an elderly woman living alone in Elbistan, awaits the return of her son Hasan, who has taken to the mountains, while her other son Mehmet, in Diyarbakır, discovers a cassette tape recorded years earlier for his father, who had worked abroad; the illiterate family had exchanged recorded voices instead of letters. Mehmet travels to Elbistan to find the remaining tapes and bring his mother home, and the family's silenced past gradually comes to light. The story draws on Doğan's own family history and the real tapes his father left behind. Premiering at the Rotterdam Film Festival on 29 January 2012, the film won Best Film and Best Screenplay at the Golden Boll festival and Best Screenplay at the Istanbul Film Festival.
