40 Square Meters of Germany (40 qm Deutschland)
Tevfik Başer directed, wrote and co-produced 40 Square Meters of Germany (German title 40 qm Deutschland), a West German drama from 1986. It follows the life of a Turkish woman living in Germany and is regarded as the first widely noticed film by a Turkish-born director in the country. It won several important awards and counts among the most significant German films of 1986. It runs about eighty minutes.
The story is set in Hamburg. Turna, a young woman who has never left her village, or even her home, finds herself with her new husband Dursun in a sunless flat of forty square metres. This tiny home is the only Germany she faces. Dursun, devoted to conservative values, forbids her to go out or join the new society freely, and cannot stand even her talking to a little girl through the window. Then Dursun dies, and Turna is left alone in a foreign world, without its language or a single acquaintance, expecting his child.
Özay Fecht, Yaman Okay and Demir Gökgöl share the main roles, with music by Claus Bantzer. Through a woman's isolation and freedom, the film portrays the era of labour migration to Germany.
