Yaman Okay — Biography

Mehmet Yaman Okay (24 August 1951, Giresun – 19 February 1993, Istanbul) was a Turkish stage, film and television actor. After finishing school in Istanbul he studied at the Şişli School of Political Sciences and came to acting through amateur theatre with the play "Bir Yol", later appearing in productions such as El Kapısı, 403 km, Leipzig Duruşması, Ana, Komün Günleri and Sakıncalı Piyade.

On screen he became one of the recognisable faces of Turkey's socially engaged cinema of the 1980s. His notable credits include Sürü, Bereketli Topraklar Üzerinde (On Fertile Lands), At as Remzi, Pehlivan as Tevfik, 40 Metrekare Almanya as Dursun, Yoksul as Süleyman, Umuda Yolculuk (Journey of Hope) as Türkmen and Piano Piano Bacaksız as Hızır. His performance in On Fertile Lands brought him the Golden Orange award for Best Supporting Actor in 1981. He also worked steadily in television, notably in the series Bizimkiler and Saygılar Bizden.

In 1984 he married the actress and screenwriter Meral Okay. He died of pancreatic cancer in 1993 at the age of 41 and was buried in Zincirlikuyu Cemetery in Istanbul.
