Necmettin Çobanoğlu — Biography
Necmettin Çobanoğlu was born on 1 March 1953 in the village of Hanzar (Teknecik) in the Refahiye district of Erzincan. He entered the film industry as a crew assistant in 1967, later working as a set hand and stunt double in Yeşilçam, then moving into production work. He was tried after the 1980 coup over his role as a Sine-Sen union manager and was acquitted in 1992; in 1999 he ran for parliament as an ÖDP candidate but fell short of the threshold.
He began his film career in 1979 with Yılmaz Güney's Sürü and Kanal, and reached wider recognition as Ömer in Güney's Yol (1982). He took the lead as Haydar in Umuda Yolculuk (1990), which won the 1991 Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. Over the following decades he appeared in films including Eve Dönüş, Firar, Güz Sancısı, Sır Çocukları and Kuzu, and in series such as Asi, Azad, Benim İçin Üzülme and Aşk ve Mavi (as Mahmut); in 2024 he appeared in Mukadderat. He received the Labour in Cinema Award at the Antalya Film Festival.
