Movie · 1982 · 5 people

Yol is a drama film released in 1982, based on a screenplay Yılmaz Güney wrote while in prison. Unable to be present at the shoot, he entrusted his former assistant Şerif Gören with directing, following his detailed instructions over roughly four months. Anticipating a ban in post-coup Turkey, Güney had the negatives sent to Switzerland; after escaping from prison, he completed the editing in France.

Through the interwoven stories of five prisoners granted a week's leave from İmralı Open Prison, the film portrays the repressive climate after the 1980 coup, the weight of custom and honor codes, poverty, and the plight of the Kurds. It stars Tarık Akan, Şerif Sezer, Halil Ergün and Necmettin Çobanoğlu, with music by Zülfü Livaneli. Yol shared the Palme d'Or at Cannes 1982 with Costa-Gavras's Missing, becoming the first Turkish production to win the award; its ban in Turkey lasted until 1999.
