Dissolutions (Çözülmeler) (translated)

Movie · 1994 · 3 people

Çözülmeler is a 1994 Turkish drama directed by Yusuf Kurçenli, who co-wrote the screenplay with Cezmi Ersöz. The film explores the psychological scars left on ordinary people by the military coups of 12 March and 12 September.

At the center of the story stands Uğur, an accountant who cannot adjust to the new values that took hold of society after the coups. He is consumed by guilt over having pushed his younger brother into politics, a path that ended with the brother's execution, and he pours this inner reckoning into a novel he is writing. His life changes when he runs into Nihal, an acquaintance from a group of friends before the 1980 coup. Nihal lives with her husband's parents while her husband serves time for a political offence. Their shared hardships draw Uğur and Nihal together, and what begins as an innocent refuge grows into a passionate love. Yet social pressure and the husband's approaching release force them toward decisions from which there is no turning back.

The leading roles are played by Tarık Akan, Nurseli İdiz and Savaş Dinçel.
