Time Regained

Time Regained (Le Temps retrouvé, 1999) is a French-Italian-Portuguese drama directed by Raúl Ruiz, adapted from the 1927 final volume of Marcel Proust's seven-part novel In Search of Lost Time. Ruiz co-wrote the screenplay with Gilles Taurand. Set in Paris in 1922, the film follows Proust on his deathbed as he looks through old photographs with his housekeeper Céleste and relives episodes from his life, realising how the friends and lovers around him shaped his work.

Marcello Mazzarella plays Proust, alongside Catherine Deneuve, Emmanuelle Béart, Vincent Perez and John Malkovich. Choosing the last volume allows the film to echo the entire novel through flashbacks, including the "lady in pink" episode from Swann's Way. The film was entered into the 1999 Cannes Film Festival.
