Hibernatus
Hibernatus is a 1969 French-Italian co-production directed by Édouard Molinaro. A comedy with science-fiction elements, it was shot in French, runs about 82 minutes and is based on Jean Bernard-Luc's stage play of the same name. Produced by Gaumont, it is remembered as a comedy carried by Louis de Funès's energetic lead performance.
De Funès plays Hubert Barrère de Tartas, a prosperous industrialist. His orderly life is thrown into turmoil when a long-lost relative of his wife Edmée (Claude Gensac), who vanished among the glaciers long ago, is found decades later frozen but alive and brought home. Awakened from his long hibernation, the man re-emerges with the habits of a bygone age, which threatens both the family's peace and Tartas's company. Michael Lonsdale is in the cast with Bernard Alane, Claude Piéplu and Jacques Legras.
The screenplay credits Jean Bernard-Luc, Louis de Funès and Jean Halain. The film opened in West German cinemas on 6 March 1970 under the title Onkel Paul, die große Pflaume, and was shown in East Germany as Der Winterschläfer. In the Soviet Union it was released in 1971 with a Mosfilm dub.
