The Helpless (Çaresizler) (translated)

Set in a harsh underworld, Çaresizler (The Helpless) mixes drama and adventure in a Turkish film from 1973. Natuk Baytan directed it from a screenplay by Nurettin Erişen. Cem Film made it, with Yahya Kılıç and Deniz Kalkavan producing. The colour feature runs 83 minutes and opened on 1 October 1973. Cüneyt Arkın leads, with Ahmet Mekin as the father figure Osman.

At its heart are two fearless men dragged into dirty business against their will. Osman's wife is attacked and killed; setting out for revenge, he falls into an underworld he cannot escape and loses track of his son Murat, orphaned young. Meanwhile Kadir, who has nobody, wins a place in the same circle through courage and fighting skill. Cüneyt Arkın plays both Murat and Kadir. Rafet and his men, tired of paying Kadir protection money, strike a deal with Osman, just out of prison, to be rid of him. Turgut Özatay plays Rafet, and the meeting of Kadir and Osman leads to results nobody could have predicted.

The cast also includes Perihan Savaş, Hakkı Koşar, Osman Alyanak, Zeyno Çilem, Giray Alpan and İhsan Gedik; Baytan himself appears as a crime boss. Kaya Ererez shot the film. In its later edition, Ören Film handled the colourisation and dubbing and Gülşah Film the restoration.
