Monica Bellucci — Biography

Monica Anna Maria Bellucci, born on 30 September 1964 in Città di Castello in Italy's Umbria region, is an Italian film actress and former model. While attending law school at the University of Perugia, she began modelling to cover her expenses, but the fashion industry soon captivated her and she left her studies behind. In 1988 she relocated to Milan and signed with Elite Model Management, quickly becoming a familiar presence on the runways of Paris and New York. She fronted campaigns for luxury houses such as Dolce & Gabbana and Dior, and later served as a brand ambassador for Cartier.

She first appeared on screen in the 1991 Italian television miniseries Vita coi figli. After portraying one of Dracula's brides in Francis Ford Coppola's Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992), she enrolled in acting classes. Following a run of Italian productions, her breakthrough came with Gilles Mimouni's The Apartment (1996), which brought her a César nomination for Most Promising Actress. In 1997 she appeared in Jan Kounen's Dobermann, where she met Vincent Cassel, beginning a personal and professional partnership that would last for years.

The year 2000 proved decisive: Under Suspicion caught the attention of American viewers, while her performance as Malèna Scordia in Giuseppe Tornatore's Malèna made her internationally famous. She then starred in Christophe Gans's period horror Brotherhood of the Wolf (2001), played Cleopatra in the comedy Asterix & Obelix: Mission Cleopatra (2002) and headlined Gaspar Noé's reverse-chronology, highly controversial thriller Irréversible (2002). In 2003 she embodied Persephone in The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions, and the following year her portrayal of Mary Magdalene in Mel Gibson's The Passion of the Christ drew critical praise.

In the years that followed she moved between European and Hollywood productions, appearing in Shoot 'Em Up (2007), The Whistleblower (2010) and The Wonders (2014), among others. Her work in Ville-Marie (2015) earned her the Dublin Film Critics' Circle Award for Best Actress, and that same year, at the age of 50, she joined Spectre, becoming the oldest Bond girl in the history of the franchise. More recent highlights include Emir Kusturica's On the Milky Road, Kaouther Ben Hania's The Man Who Sold His Skin (2020) and the role of Delores in Tim Burton's Beetlejuice Beetlejuice (2024). On television she appeared in Mozart in the Jungle and Call My Agent!, and in 2019 she made her stage debut as Maria Callas in Letters and Memoirs.

Her honours include the David di Donatello, two Globo d'oro and two Nastro d'Argento awards, as well as the Donostia Award at the San Sebastián Film Festival. France granted her the insignia of Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters in 2006 and of the Legion of Honour in 2016. She represents Italy as a permanent member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, and in 2018 Forbes Italy placed her among the country's 100 most successful women. In her private life she was married first to Claudio Carlos Basso and later to Vincent Cassel; the second marriage produced two daughters, Deva and Léonie, and Deva Cassel has followed her mother into modelling.
