The Miracle

The Miracle

TV Series · 2018 · 3 people

An idea by the Italian novelist Niccolò Ammaniti lies behind The Miracle (Il miracolo), an Italian-French mystery series with a supernatural edge. During a raid on a mob boss's hideout, the police find a statue of the Virgin Mary that weeps blood. Nobody can explain it, yet the power of the enigma starts to derail the lives of everyone who comes into contact with it.

Rather than following a single storyline, the series traces how the strange discovery changes the lives of several different people. The cast includes Guido Caprino, Alba Rohrwacher, Tommaso Ragno and Lorenza Indovina. It ran for a single season of eight episodes.

Ammaniti created the series, wrote it and directed it himself. It was produced by Sky, Wildside, ARTE France and Kwaï. After a world premiere at the Séries Mania festival in 2018, where it won a prize, it aired on Sky Atlantic in Italy from May 8 to May 29, 2018. In Germany it began on Arte on January 3, 2019, with all episodes available online beforehand.

Through different eyes

Series Binger A series devotee tracking character arcs, cast chemistry and season pacing.

One season of eight episodes is the ideal length for a mystery like this; the story ends before it gets stretched thin. A statue of the Virgin Mary weeping blood is such a strong hook that it is hard to stop after the first episode. Rather than chasing a single plotline, the series follows how the statue shakes up different people's lives, which gives the characters room to breathe. Not every character's thread is equally gripping, though, and a few side stories sag in the middle. The strands with Guido Caprino and Alba Rohrwacher are among the most memorable.

Cinephile Looks at script, editing and directing choices; keeps a distance from formula films.

Created, written and directed by Niccolò Ammaniti, this is one of those rare television works with an unmistakable author's signature. The central enigma, a blood-weeping statue found in a gang boss's hideout, is never reduced to a simple police puzzle; Ammaniti cares more about effect than explanation. That choice moves the series away from thriller and towards a many-voiced chorus on faith, doubt and helplessness. The ensemble structure sometimes makes the editing feel scattered, yet the atmosphere holds steady throughout. Its prize at Séries Mania is no surprise. It may test the patience of viewers who want clear answers; for those happy to live with a question, it is a rich experience.

Action & Thriller Fan Puts pace, tension and set pieces first; little patience for slow drama.

A statue weeping blood, found in a police raid... On paper it is pure thriller. But instead of speeding up from there, the series slows down and focuses on people's inner lives more than on events. If you came for action, it takes patience. Good thing it is only eight episodes, or it would be very easy to drop halfway.
