Sugar pastry (Şekerpare) (translated)

Şekerpare is a 1983 Turkish musical comedy directed by Atıf Yılmaz. Adapted by screenwriter Yavuz Turgul from Turgut Özakman's stage play "Bir Şehnaz Oyun", it was produced by Ertem Eğilmez for Arzu Film.

Set in Ottoman-era Istanbul around the Galata district, the story follows Ziver Bey, a corrupt police chief who, together with his aide Hurşit, extorts protection money from local merchants and has built a rotten system no one dares challenge. Cumali, an honest night watchman exiled to Istanbul for his integrity, naively believes Ziver to be as upright as himself and becomes devoted to him. Meanwhile Ziver, having left his foster daughter Peyker pregnant, looks for someone to marry her off to in order to cover up the scandal. Impressed by Cumali's loyalty, he picks him as the groom — until Cumali's visit to a brothel, where he meets Şekerpare, derails the scheme.

İlyas Salman, Şener Şen and Yaprak Özdemiroğlu headline the cast, joined by Ayşen Gruda, Serra Yılmaz, Şevket Altuğ and Neriman Köksal. With its period flavor and musical numbers, it remains a fondly remembered classic of Turkish comedy cinema.
