The Honest Man (Namuslu) (translated)

Movie · 1984 · 5 people

Namuslu (The Honest Man) is a 1984 Turkish comedy directed by Ertem Eğilmez from a screenplay by Başar Sabuncu. The film gave Şener Şen his first leading role, marking his shift away from the deceitful, immoral characters he had previously played toward honest-man parts. Sabuncu received the SİYAD Best Screenplay Award in 1985 for his script.

Şen plays Ali Rıza, a modest, scrupulous cashier who is despised for his honesty while everyone around him schemes for money. When the workplace's cash is stolen by robbers, nobody believes his innocence; instead, his colleagues and even his family assume he finally embezzled the money himself, and their respect for him suddenly grows. Unable to bear this false reputation, Ali Rıza resigns himself to acting like the thief they take him for. Co-starring Adile Naşit, Ayşen Gruda and Erdal Özyağcılar, the film satirizes the political order of 1980s Turkey and society's obsession with money.
