Head-On (Duvara Karşı)
Written and directed by Fatih Akın, the 2004 German-Turkish co-production Head-On (Duvara Karşı) tells a love story stretching from Hamburg to Istanbul, with dialogue in German, Turkish and English. It is the first part of Akın's "Love, Death and the Devil" trilogy, continued in 2007 with The Edge of Heaven.
Cahit, a 40-year-old alcoholic and drug-addicted widower who has lost his will to live, and Sibel, a young woman desperate to escape her oppressive conservative family, agree to a marriage of convenience. What begins as a means of escape gradually turns into genuine love, but the couple is drawn into a painful path marked by jealousy and violence. Birol Ünel and Sibel Kekilli star. The film won the Golden Bear at the 54th Berlin International Film Festival and Best Film at the European Film Awards.
