Tchéky Karyo — Biography

Tchéky Karyo was born Baruh Djaki Karyo on 4 October 1953 in Istanbul, the son of a Greek Jewish mother and a Turkish Sephardic Jewish father, and moved to France with his family as a child. After schooling at the Lycée Arago in Paris, he trained as an actor at the Cyrano Theatre and went on to perform classical and contemporary works with the Daniel Sorano Company and the National Theatre of Strasbourg.

He moved into cinema in the 1980s, earning a César nomination for his role as Petrovic in La Balance (1982) and winning the Prix Jean Gabin in 1986. L'Ours and Nikita brought him wider recognition, and his fluency in English led to supporting parts in Anglo-American films — GoldenEye, Bad Boys, Crying Freeman, The Patriot and The Messenger among them — while in France he continued to take leading roles in Dobermann, Le Roi danse and Jappeloup. He brought the character of detective Julien Baptiste to the BBC drama The Missing, then carried him into the spin-off series Baptiste; between 2013 and 2018 he also played César in the Belle and Sebastian film trilogy, and he released two albums as a singer.

Karyo's first marriage, to actress Isabelle Pasco, ended in divorce; in 2002 he married actress Valérie Keruzoré, twenty-three years his junior, with whom he had a daughter and a son and remained married until his death. He died of cancer in Quimper on 31 October 2025, at the age of 72.
