And the Band Played On is a 1993 American television docudrama directed by Roger Spottiswoode, with a teleplay by Arnold Schulman adapted from Randy Shilts's bestselling 1987 non-fiction book about the early years of the AIDS epidemic.

The film follows CDC epidemiologist Don Francis (Matthew Modine) as he investigates the mysterious new disease spreading across the United States in the early 1980s. His work is hampered by bureaucratic indifference, rivalries within the scientific community and resistance from the blood industry, while in San Francisco activist Bill Kraus fights to protect the gay community. The large ensemble cast also includes Alan Alda, Richard Gere, Anjelica Huston, Ian McKellen, Lily Tomlin, Steve Martin and Phil Collins.

Produced for HBO, the film premiered at the Montreal World Film Festival before its broadcast on 11 September 1993, and was later released theatrically in several countries. It won three Primetime Emmy Awards, including Outstanding Made for Television Movie, and received two Golden Globe nominations.
