Mary Magdalene

Mary Magdalene is a 2018 biblical biographical drama directed by Garth Davis from a screenplay by Helen Edmundson and Philippa Goslett. A co-production of the United States, the United Kingdom, and Australia, it had its world premiere at the National Gallery in London on February 26, 2018. Its score, created with Hildur Guðnadóttir, was the last film music Jóhann Jóhannsson completed before his death.

Set in the Holy Land in the first century, the story follows Mary, a young woman from a small fishing village who defies her traditional family to join the movement led by Jesus of Nazareth. Traveling to Jerusalem, she witnesses the birth of Christianity while facing tension with the male apostles, above all Peter, and the film offers a feminist reading of her figure. Rooney Mara, Joaquin Phoenix, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Tahar Rahim star.
