The Book to be Burned (Yakılacak Kitap) (translated)

Movie · 1968 · 3 people

Yakılacak Kitap ("The Book to Be Burned") is a 1968 black-and-white Turkish melodrama directed by Süreyya Duru from a script by Remzi Jöntürk, made as the second film adaptation of Etem İzzet Benice's 1927 novel of the same name. It follows Vicdan, a girl orphaned young and taken in by a foster family, whose adult life becomes entangled in hidden family secrets, betrayal, and an ill-fated romance rooted in mistaken kinship.

The film stars Nazan Şoray, Ekrem Bora and Tanju Gürsu, and works through genre staples typical of Yeşilçam family melodrama of the period - concealed parentage, an inheritance dispute, a last-minute revelation of blood ties - before resolving in a happy ending. It is also notable as one of Şoray's earliest screen roles, made when she was only fourteen.
