Grapes of Hope (Umut Üzümleri) (translated)

Umut Üzümleri is a comedy-drama written and directed by Tunç Okan, produced by Rönesans Film as a co-production of Turkey, Switzerland, Germany, and France. After screening at the Golden Orange Film Festival in 2012, the film opened in theaters on May 17, 2013. It is adapted from a work by Fakir Baykurt.

Set in Tozak Köyü, a small village in Central Anatolia, the story follows villagers who mortgaged their fields to a merchant to finance an unfinished irrigation project. When the debt goes unpaid, the merchant decides to turn the land into a new settlement. Led by the newly appointed teacher Ozan (Yetkin Dikinciler), the villagers fight to save their land by planting vineyards. The film's song, "Song of Hope," is derived from a Crimean Tatar melody and performed by Nilüfer. Because it intertwines comedy with drama, the film has been described as "a very serious comedy."
