The Swindle

Directed by Claude Chabrol, this 1997 French-Swiss crime comedy follows a pair of skilled con artists who travel across France making a living from small-scale swindles. Their usual targets are delegates at business conventions, and they content themselves with lifting only modest sums from each victim. The woman of the duo, however, sets her sights on something far bigger: after spotting a financier about to transport millions in Swiss francs, the two launch an elaborate game of seduction and deception to rob their mark. Starring Isabelle Huppert, Michel Serrault and François Cluzet, the film sees the pair steal the laundered fortune, then trick the gangsters who catch them by handing back only part of the loot. The partners are ultimately forced to turn on each other over what remains. The original title, Rien ne va plus, echoes the croupier's call in roulette once bets are closed. Part of the film was shot at the historic Waldhaus Hotel.
