Story of Women (Une affaire de femmes)

Movie · 1988–1989 · 2 people

Une affaire de femmes (Story of Women) is a 1988 French drama film directed by Claude Chabrol, who co-wrote the screenplay with Colo Tavernier O'Hagan. Adapted from lawyer Francis Szpiner's book of the same name, it is based on the true story of Marie-Louise Giraud, one of the last women guillotined in France, executed on 30 July 1943 for performing 27 abortions in the Cherbourg area.

Set during the turmoil of World War II, the film follows Marie, whose husband is taken prisoner, as she turns to performing abortions to support her children, defying the era's laws and social values. Isabelle Huppert won the Best Actress prize at the 45th Venice International Film Festival for her leading role, and the film was later nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Foreign Film.
