Mary (Meryem) (translated)

Meryem is a 2013 Turkish drama written and directed by Atalay Taşdiken. Meryem, a young woman from a small Anatolian town known for her beauty, is married off to Mustafa, a man who works in Istanbul. Only a few days after the wedding, Mustafa returns to the city, leaving Meryem behind in his family's home, where she begins to serve them. Raised by her mother on the belief that a bride who enters her husband's house can never go back, Meryem tries to find happiness inside this husbandless marriage by turning her endurance into a quiet game of acceptance played with herself.

Everything shifts when Murat, a young man who was in love with her before his military service, returns to the village. Meryem is now seen as a threat, and her father-in-law decides to send her to Istanbul. Yet after all the preparations, an unexpected ending awaits everyone.

Zeynep Çamcı and İsmail Hacıoğlu lead the cast, alongside Zerrin Sümer, Mehmet Usta and İpek Bilgin. Çamcı won the Best Actress award at the 2013 Antalya Golden Orange Film Festival for this performance.
