A Madonna in Laleli (Laleli’de Bir Azize)

Movie · 1998 · 4 people

A Saint in Laleli is a 1998 Turkish crime film directed by Kudret Sabancı. Sabancı's first feature film, it attracted attention at the time of its release for its unconventional dialogues. One of the first works of the "New Filmmakers" group, it was filmed concurrently with Serdar Akar's *On Board*, and the characters from both films occasionally intersect within the same story. The film's music was composed by Uğur Yücel.

The story follows three friends who run illegal operations and traffic women in the back streets of Istanbul. Unbeknownst to their boss, the trio decide to operate independently. While taking a Romanian woman, whom they claim is a virgin, to a wealthy client, they are robbed by four men; they lose both their money and the woman. When they find the woman beaten, they set out to get revenge on those who did this to them.

The film was released nationwide in Türkiye on March 12, 1999, and received the Jury Special Award at the 1999 Orhon Murat Arıburnu Awards.
