Kızıl Goncalar

Red Buds (Kızıl Goncalar) (translated)

TV Series · 2023–2025 · 10 people

Gold Film produces Kızıl Goncalar (Red Buds), a Turkish drama series shown on NOW every Monday. Politically charged, it holds a mirror up to Turkish society and builds its story on the deep split between strictly devout and liberal, progressive ways of living. The first episode aired on December 18, 2023, and the show reached 46 episodes across two seasons. Because the story had run its course and the ratings had slipped, it ended with the 46th episode on April 28, 2025.

At its centre are Meryem, who comes from a devout background, and Levent, an idealistic doctor. Their paths cross because of their daughter, and the series uses that meeting to show how far apart the two worlds stand. Özcan Deniz and Özgü Namal take the leading roles. Mert Yazıcıoğlu, Erkan Avcı, Hazal Türesan, Selen Öztürk, Şerif Erol, Mert Turak and Tuğrul Tülek are also in the cast.

Ömür Atay and Özgür Sevimli shared the directing, and Şükrü Necati Şahin wrote the screenplay. After its Turkish run, the series was also screened in Serbia on Happy TV in 2026.

Through different eyes

History & Society Lens Asks about the period, the social background and what the work reflects.

Kızıl Goncalar touches one of the most sensitive fault lines in Turkish society: the deep split between strictly devout and liberal, progressive ways of life. The crossing paths of Meryem, from a devout background, and Levent, an idealistic doctor, brought together because of their daughter, make visible how far apart those two worlds stand. Bringing the subject to a mainstream series is a bold choice. But a politically loaded narrative always risks reducing characters to representatives of a camp; how far the human complexity of both sides survives is a question viewers must weigh for themselves. For anyone wanting to see social polarisation debated on screen, it is still an important text.

Series Binger A series devotee tracking character arcs, cast chemistry and season pacing.

The scenes between Özcan Deniz and Özgü Namal are the show's load-bearing pillar; the meeting of two characters from different worlds sparks real curiosity from the early episodes on. The supporting cast, with Mert Yazıcıoğlu, Erkan Avcı and Hazal Türesan, adds depth as well. But it is no coincidence that the series wrapped at episode 46 once the story had run its course and the ratings had slipped: the second season cannot hold on to the intensity of the first, and some subplots feel like stalling. Still, the opening season is one of the series openings of recent years most worth talking about.

Family Viewer Asks whether the whole household can watch it; cares about humour and heart.

Kızıl Goncalar is a drama with heavy themes and a strong political edge. Faith, lifestyle and conflicts within families are treated seriously. It is not suitable for young children. Watched with older teens, it can be a good starting point for a talk afterwards. But if your household holds differing views, be ready for the conversation to heat up while you watch.
