Where Is My Mother Tongue (Ana Dilim Nerede)

Where Is My Mother Tongue (Zaza: Zonê Ma Koti Yo) is a 2012 Turkish drama film written and directed by Veli Kahraman, regarded as the first feature-length production in which the Zaza language is spoken. Dialogue is in Zaza and Turkish.

The film follows the elderly Mustafa, who learns that his mother tongue faces extinction. Feeling responsible for never having passed the language on to his children, and confronting the thought that his life is nearing its end after an illness, he decides to record what he still remembers of his fading language. Kahraman, whose mother and father play themselves, depicts how decades of official language policy left a cultural trauma on a middle-class family, while drawing attention to UNESCO's list of endangered languages, often with touches of dark humour.

The film screened in the National Competition of the 31st International Istanbul Film Festival and at the 34th Moscow Film Festival, and competed at the 19th Adana Golden Koza and 49th Antalya Golden Orange film festivals.
