Colonel Redl (Albay Redl)

Colonel Redl (Oberst Redl) is a 1985 biographical drama, an Austrian-German-Hungarian co-production directed by Hungarian filmmaker István Szabó. Written by Szabó together with Péter Dobai and loosely inspired by British playwright John Osborne's play A Patriot for Me, the film draws on the real life of Alfred Redl, an officer of humble origins who rises through the Austro-Hungarian army to head its intelligence service before World War I, only to be driven to suicide.

Running 144 minutes, the production was backed by Austrian public broadcaster ORF alongside Germany's ZDF, and its cast includes Hungarian actor of Turkish descent Can Togay and noted Hungarian performer Károly Eperjes. The film won the Jury Prize at the 1985 Cannes Film Festival and the BAFTA for Best Film Not in the English Language, and was nominated for the Academy Award and Golden Globe in the same category.
