Muharrem Gürses — Biography

Muharrem Gürses was one of the most prolific figures of Turkish popular cinema, working for roughly half a century as actor, screenwriter, director and producer. Wide audiences know him as the school principal in the Hababam Sınıfı films, while the film trade knew him for melodramas that he directed in volume. That character is remembered for his love of money.

He lost his father in the First World War and his mother to tuberculosis, and grew up with his grandfather. After graduating from the Istanbul Teachers' School he became a painting teacher, and also taught in Samsun. He entered the theatre in 1931 at the Istanbul City Theatre, and in 1943 founded the Gürses Theatre with Sezer Sezin and Hulusi Kentmen. When that short-lived venture ended he wrote serialised novels for newspapers. He moved into film in 1945 as assistant director on Köroğlu and started directing with Zeynep'in Gözyaşları (1952). In 1965 he set up his own film company and handled production, direction and writing together, building his own line in melodrama. He made 27 films with Muhterem Nur. His directing credits include Battal Gazi and Tütüncü Kızı Emine; as an actor he appeared in Barbaros Hayreddin Paşa (1951), Köroğlu (1968) and the series Yorgun Savaşçı (1979).

His son is the comedian Atilla Arcan. He died in Istanbul on 7 April 1999, aged 85, and is buried in Zincirlikuyu Cemetery.
