Zuhal Olcay — Biography
Zuhal Olcay, born Zuhal İşanç, arrived on 10 August 1957 in Üsküdar as the only child of a barber, Cevat İşanç, and his wife Süheyla; several relatives worked in conservatory teaching and opera. She finished the Ankara State Conservatory in 1976, spent a year in London, then joined the State Theatres and later the İzmir State Theatre; her daughter Ceren was born in 1981.
She debuted on screen in the 1980 film Sönmüş Ocak and became known through Parmak Damgası. On stage she won prizes for Nina in The Seagull and Irma in The Balcony; playing Eva Perón in the 1989 production of Evita pushed her toward a recording career that produced numerous albums. Her role in Sahte Cennete Veda brought her Germany's Golden Film Ribbon award, and Hiçbiryerde (2001) won her Best Actress at both the Istanbul Film Festival and the SİYAD awards.
During her 1992-2004 marriage to actor Haluk Bilginer she co-founded the Tiyatro Stüdyosu and later the Oyun Atölyesi theatre company. A court case brought over a free-speech petition she signed in 2000 ended in acquittal in 2003; in 2018 she was convicted of insulting the president over song lyrics, a case that dragged on for years. She was elected head of the Actors Union in 2024, and received honorary lifetime awards from the Altın Koza festival in 2019 and the Istanbul Film Festival in 2025.
