Udo Kier — Biography

Udo Kier, born Udo Kierspe on 14 October 1944 in Cologne, Germany, built a screen career spanning more than sixty years, appearing in upwards of 200 films and television productions and becoming one of European and American cinema's most recognizable character actors.

He achieved cult status through his lead performances in Paul Morrissey's "Flesh for Frankenstein" and "Blood for Dracula" in the early 1970s, and went on to collaborate with directors such as Rainer Werner Fassbinder, Lars von Trier, Gus Van Sant, Werner Herzog and Dario Argento. His filmography, ranging from von Trier's "Dogville" to the "Nymphomaniac" films and "Dragged Across Concrete", showcased both eccentric and dramatically nuanced roles; his performance in "Swan Song" earned him an Independent Spirit Award nomination for best male lead, and he received a Special Teddy Award at the Berlin International Film Festival for his contribution to queer cinema.

Kier also maintained ties to Turkish cinema, appearing in productions such as "İtiraf", "Aşka Ruhunu Kat" and "Pars: Kiraz Operasyonu". He died on 23 November 2025 in California at the age of 81, remembered as one of the defining character actors of his generation.
