Romantic (Romantik) (translated)
Romantik is a Turkish feature film directed by Sinan Çetin, who co-wrote the screenplay with Galip Tekin and Gülin Tokat; it opened in cinemas on 2 March 2007. Plato Film produced the picture, and its music carries the signatures of Pamela Spence and Teoman.
The story follows two close friends, Ömer and Gökhan, who fall for the same young woman: the mysterious Yasemin, who never utters a word and is widely assumed to be mute. When Ömer is unwillingly drawn into a murder and forced to flee abroad, his best friend keeps his letters from reaching Yasemin and wins her for himself. Years later Ömer returns, and a reckoning becomes unavoidable.
What sets the film apart is its structure: partway through, the narrative abandons the hero and shifts to the "villain's" point of view, leaving the audience unsure whom to believe. Okan Bayülgen stars as Ömer, joined by Yasemin Kozanoğlu as Yasemin, Teoman as Gökhan, David Hemmings as Sadun and Semih Sergen as Mazhar.
