In the Fade (Paramparça)

Movie · 2017–2018 · 3 people

In the Fade is a 2017 German-French drama written and directed by Fatih Akin together with co-writer Hark Bohm. The story follows a woman who loses her Turkish-Kurdish husband and young son in a bombing, and the devastating grief that pushes her toward seeking justice. When a far-right couple linked to the attack is acquitted by the court for lack of sufficient evidence, she sets out to track down the fugitives and confront them herself.

Diane Kruger leads the cast, with Denis Moschitto, Numan Acar and Ulrich Tukur also appearing. The picture premiered in the main competition at the 2017 Cannes Film Festival, where Kruger received the award for best actress. It went on to become Germany's official submission for the foreign-language Oscar at the 90th Academy Awards, reaching the shortlist but missing a final nomination. The production fared better at the 2018 Golden Globes, winning the prize for best foreign-language film. Running roughly 106 minutes, it blends courtroom drama with a personal revenge thriller built around loss and retribution.
