On the Path (Na putu)

Movie · 2010 · 3 people

Jasmila Žbanić wrote and directed On the Path (Bosnian: Na putu), a 2010 Bosnian drama, filmed in the Bosnian language, about the difficulties that surface in a young couple's relationship. Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Austria and Germany shared the production. On the festival circuit it drew international attention, competing for the Golden Bear at the 60th Berlin International Film Festival and collecting the FIPRESCI Prize at the 7th Yerevan Golden Apricot International Film Festival. Its lead actress Zrinka Cvitešić also received the Golden Arena for Best Actress at the Pula Film Festival.

The story is set in Sarajevo and follows Luna and Amar, a young couple marked by the Bosnian War. Zrinka Cvitešić plays Luna and Leon Lučev plays Amar. After Amar loses his job he joins a conservative religious community, a step that shakes their life together to its foundations and pushes Luna to question the man she is with and the future of the relationship. The cast also includes Mirjana Karanović as Nada, Ermin Bravo as Bahrija, Nina Violić, Izudin Bajrović and Jasna Beri.

Running roughly one hundred minutes, the film is known in France as Le Choix de Luna and in Germany as Zwischen uns das Paradies.

Through different eyes

History & Society Lens Asks about the period, the social background and what the work reflects.

Jasmila Žbanić looks at the everyday life of a generation in Sarajevo still marked by the war. Amar turning to a conservative religious community after losing his job can be read not merely as a matter of faith but as a search for something to hold on to amid unemployment and the emptiness of the post-war years. Luna's questioning shows how the personal and the social intertwine: one relationship becomes a question about which way a whole society is heading. The film's worth lies in keeping that question open rather than handing out easy answers. An important work for anyone curious about the recent history of the Balkans and post-war societies.

Cinephile Looks at script, editing and directing choices; keeps a distance from formula films.

Its selection for the Golden Bear competition in Berlin is no surprise: rather than big events, Žbanić builds a careful narrative that tracks the small cracks inside a relationship. Zrinka Cvitešić carries the film, and her Golden Arena at Pula does the performance justice. A structure centred on Luna's questioning makes the viewer a partner in her hesitation, and Leon Lučev never lets Amar slide into easy caricature. My reservation is that, around the middle of its roughly hundred minutes, the story seems to restate the same tension several times. Tighter editing could have made it sharper.

Action & Thriller Fan Puts pace, tension and set pieces first; little patience for slow drama.

Honestly, this isn't my genre. Don't expect chases or big showdowns; the film is built from start to finish on a couple's relationship and the conversations between them. Still, waiting to see what Luna will decide builds a quiet tension inside you. Give it a go on a patient evening; if you want something fast, pick another film.
