My Mother's Castle

Adapted from the second volume of Marcel Pagnol's autobiographical childhood memoirs, Le Château de ma mère (My Mother's Castle) serves as a direct continuation of a companion film the same director made and released the very same year. The screenplay, penned by Jérôme Tonnerre, stays close to the source novel that Pagnol had published in 1957. Philippe Caubère and Nathalie Roussel play the writer's parents, while Didier Pain and Thérèse Liotard take on the roles of uncle Jules and aunt Rose. Passages taken directly from the original text are read aloud in voiceover by Jean-Pierre Darras, and Georges Wilson also appears among the cast.

Vladimir Cosma composed the score, and Alain Poiré served as producer. Together with its immediate predecessor, the film forms the second half of a two-part account of Pagnol's boyhood in Provence, and the pairing has come to be regarded as a beloved piece of French cinema built on cherished childhood recollection.
