Rebel (İsyan) (translated)

Rebel is a 1979 Turkish drama directed by Orhan Aksoy from a screenplay by Sadık Şendil. The story unfolds in a border region ruled by a ruthless Agha (Erol Taş) who controls seven villages and lives off smuggling. The father of young Apo (Kadir İnanır) works as one of the Agha's smugglers and dies after stepping on a mine; out of fear of the landlord, the family cannot even claim the body.

Apo is in love with Ayno (Melike Zobu), the daughter of a villager named Şahan, and to raise the bride-price money he has no choice but to join the Agha's smuggling runs. Meanwhile the Agha's son Şeyhmuz covets Ayno, so the Agha orders Apo to be shot in the back during a crossing. Forced into marriage with Şeyhmuz and then sent back to her father's house after a scandalous wedding night, Ayno is killed by her own father under custom's law. Rescued and healed by nomads, Apo returns to learn of his beloved's fate and confronts the Agha and his son. Set against mined border fields, the film portrays the landlord system, the pressure of tribal custom and the villagers' uprising.
