Melike Zobu — Biography

Remembered above all as Hatice in the Kemal Sunal comedy Deli Deli Küpeli (1986), Melike Zobu is an actress from the last years of Yeşilçam. That part is why the press still calls her “Yeşilçam's Spy Hatice” many years on. Born Ayşe Melike Zobu, she worked in both theatre and film, and she is a cousin of the stage and screen actress Bilge Zobu.

She entered cinema in 1978, right after being chosen as a beauty-contest winner. Her early screen work includes Derviş Bey (1978), İsyan (1979) and Destan (1980), with Kanije Kalesi and Yaz Bitti from the same years. Her busiest stretch was the second half of the 1980s, when films such as Yunus Emre, Küçük Prens, Seni Seviyorum, Ferman and Kurt Payı followed one another, and she appeared on television in Yalnız Efe and Köroğlu. She mostly played hard-edged women. Among her last credits are Aliye and the television series 3. İstasyon (both 1992), while Halkalı Köle and Boynu Bükükler date from the mid-1980s.

She married in 1989 and bade farewell to cinema in the early 1990s. In recent years the public has talked about her mainly through her old roles and her changed appearance over time.
