Erol Taş — Biography
Erol Taş was born on 28 February 1926 in Erzurum and died on 8 November 1998 in Istanbul. Before turning to acting he competed as an amateur boxer, reportedly finishing second in an Istanbul championship, and he later said he drifted into film work after watching a shoot near his neighborhood. Over a long Yeşilçam career he became known chiefly for playing gruff, menacing, negative characters rather than heroes. Between 1957 and 1998 he appeared in more than two hundred films as well as several television series. His best-remembered role came in Metin Erksan's Susuz Yaz (Dry Summer), which won the Golden Bear at the 14th Berlin International Film Festival. He was also honored with the Golden Orange Award for Best Supporting Actor. Taş had only a primary-school education and continued working in cinema until his death.
